UNIT 3   THE HOLY WHO?

 Unit Overview
Unit 3 explores the Holy Spirit as the third person of the Trinity, as “living water” and as “fire”. It explains what the Holy Spirit does; how we need Him in our lives and gives teens an opportunity to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This unit also explains how the Holy Spirit gives us power to live a life that is pleasing to God. Teens will gain an understanding of how having the very Spirit of Christ within them will cause the character of Christ to become their character; and how to develop the character of Christ (i.e. the fruit of the Spirit) in their life.

This unit provides material for 32 lessons

Lesson Outline

PAGE 1     WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?
The Holy Spirit is not a “what”, he is a “who”. He is a person that you can have a  relationship with. He has a mind that thinks; he feels emotions and has a will to make decisions. He is the third person of the Trinity.

PAGE 2 - 3    WHAT DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT DO?
The Holy Spirit is very active in our lives, teaching, convicting, guiding, helping, giving power, love, strength and assurance. By looking at how the Holy Spirit helped various Biblical people, teens will understand how they too need the help of the Holy Spirit.

PAGE 4    HAVE YOU MET THE HOLY SPIRIT?
The first time we meet the Holy Spirit is when we put our faith in Jesus. He brings our spirit to life and allows us to be born again in a spiritual way so we can be a part to God’s family. Teens will consider whether they have been born again into God's family.

PAGE 5    LIVING WATER
Just as our physical bodies need water to survive physically, our spirits need spiritual water to survive and grow spiritually. This spiritual water, or living water, is the Holy Spirit.

PAGE 6    BELIEVE, REPENT, RECEIVE
The three basic steps needed to be a follower of Jesus are explored. That is, BELIEVE Jesus is the Son of God, REPENT of sin and RECEIVE the baptism or fullness of the Holy Spirit.

PAGE 7    TRICKLE OR FLOOD
In Acts 8 and 19, there are examples of people who had put their faith in Jesus, yet they didn’t know about the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Teens will assess their own experience with the Holy Spirit and come to understand that receiving the baptism or “flood” of the Holy Spirit is one of the basics of being a follower of Jesus.
PAGE 8    GOD’S GIFT
Holy Spirit is God’s promised gift. As a gift, the Holy Spirit cannot be purchased or earned and is given to any who ask.

PAGE 9     RECEIVING GOD’S GIFT
Teens will be invited to affirm their belief and trust in Jesus, to repent of sin and receive the fullness or baptism of the Holy Spirit.

PAGE 10     BAPTISM OF FIRE
Jesus told his followers to wait for God’s gift of the Holy Spirit; and to expect to be baptised with the Holy Spirit. When this happened tongues of fire rested on their heads, which introduces the imagery of fire being associated with the Holy Spirit. Teens will gain an understanding of how having the Holy Spirit within them will enable Him to "burn away" any "rubbish" (sin) in their lives.

PAGE11    DON’T PUT OUT THE SPIRIT'S FIRE
Making wrong choices can put out the fire of the Holy Spirit within you. Teens will discover a number of ways to keep the fire of God’s Spirit burning within them such as repentance, reading the Bible, praying and spending time with other Christians.

PAGE12     LIFE TO THE MAX
Jesus came to give us “life to the full” which is contrasted against the evil plans of Satan as stated in John 10:10.

PAGE 13    LIFE TO THE MAX – FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
As teens form an idea of what they think living “Life to the Max” means, they will discover from Ephesians 5:15-18, four keys (Biblical principles) for wise living, one of which is being filled with the Holy Spirit that will enable them to live “Life to the Max” Jesus’ way.

PAGE 14    WHAT? 24 / 7?
The Holy Spirit is with us 24/7. Every minute of every day He is communicating with our spirit, leading us, guiding us, teaching us and helping us be more like Jesus. Children will learn that their body is a temple where the Holy Spirit lives and as such, they should use their body in a way that brings honour to God.

PAGE 15     WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT? (Part 1)
Expect the Holy Spirit within you to cause good changes in you, as He makes you more and more like Jesus. Expect a greater love for God; an awareness of God’s presence with you; and a greater love for and understanding of God’s Word.

PAGE 17     WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT? (Part 3)

PAGE 31 - 32      FRUIT OF THE FLESH
Anyone who allows their own desires to rule them instead of the Holy Spirit can expect the “fruit of the flesh” as mentioned in Galatians 5:19-21 to grow in them.

PAGE 33      BAD FRUIT OR GOOD FRUIT
Teens will evaluate their own character and identify any fruit of the flesh or fruit of the Spirit they may be demonstrating. They will learn that repentance and staying connected to Jesus, The Vine, will enable his character to become a part of them so they can produce good fruit.

PAGE 34      FRUIT-O-METER
Using a unique Fruit-O-Meter, teens will identify those fruit of the Spirit they are lacking and will be encouraged to ask the Holy Spirit to help them  in these areas so they can become more like Jesus.

PAGE 35 - 56     KEEP YOUR FRUIT FROM SPOILING
Teens will discover how to stay connected to Jesus, the Vine, so that his character continues to grow in them. There is a warning about connecting with people who demonstrate “fruit of the flesh” as this will cause their good fruit to be spoilt.
